Originally a periodic kiln (beehive kiln) brick plant until 1951, the manufacturing facility at Ragland has successfully produced products that resemble and match the old periodic kiln brick.

Brick produced over the years in old-style beehive kilns had distinct colors ranging from coal black, maroon, red and orange. This unique range of colors, as well as the dark rich reds, is replicated at the Ragland brick plant today. Ragland Clay Products has an abundance of high quality, iron-rich shale.

The natural evolution from the labor intensive beehive kiln brick plants of the early 1900's to modern brick manufacturing facilities has resulted in the loss of colors and distinct look achieved by these earlier plants.

However, Ragland Clay Products replicates the look and quality of brick products produced by the old beehive kilns which we see all around us in our churches, schools, halls and streets throughout the country.

The owners of Ragland Clay Products L.L.C. purchased an existing brick plant in November, 1996. Since then there have been extensive modifications and improvements to the plant - everything from updating burners in the kiln to updating the monorail and electrical wiring. The plant today is being renovated one piece of equipment at a time.

It is the rare reds of the brick that come from the iron rich clay of North Alabama. This bold, rich color permeates the brick body - not just the surface. Our large deposits of this raw material give Ragland Clay Products the ability to match brick produced from the old beehive kilns. This allows Ragland Clay Products to hold an attractive niche market in the structural clay products industry.

Since 1996, the product quality has been improved significantly. Our face brick meet or exceed ASTM C-216 specifications for FBS type/SW Brick, (severe weather.) And, our pavers exceed the ASTM C-1272 and C-902 specifications.

The product line also has had many changes. Ragland Clay Products offers Architectural, Residential and Paver products, including "The Antebellum Series." "The Antebellum Series" is a mud-coated brick with a tumbled appearance to achieve the distressed look of used brick. The result is a high quality and durable brick that will lend instant character to new construction. The "Antebellum Series" is only part of our residential line.

Ragland Clay Products brick pavers are low absorption, high strength pavers that are colorfast and are more attractive than concrete pavers and stronger than used brick.
